BMI Artist Showcase

BMI Artist Showcase 4/24/08
Luckie Lounge, Atlanta, GA

Forever I Love Atlanta.soul singers, conscious emcee, and trap music hustlers, there’s a place for you here. Just in the month of April, the city has welcomed performances from acts as diverse as Masta Ace, Lina, and Estelle. Knowing all that BMI (Broadcast Music, Incorporated), the leading performing rights organization in the U.S., hosted an unsigned artist’s showcase to shine light on the many fledging and undiscovered acts throughout the city.

Teyana Taylor was the first of the three headline performers.
performing songs such as her his single "Google me" and "Switch it up"[video below]
Next Sean Garrett hit the stage performing "Grippin"

The show began at 8pm, and by 1am the headliner (Lil Wayne) still had not reached the venue. Reportedly, DJs attempted to stall for time by playing ATL classics from Outkast, but that was only a fleeting antidote as tensions began to rise.
When Wayne FINALLY hit the stage, the crowd went crazy. Performing his hits "Money On My Mind/You Ain’t Know" && “Hello Brooklyn/Dey Know (Remix)”

John Legend: Ordinary Ghetto

Smh.

I ran across this video some time late 2006 and laughed till my sides hurt. As funny as this parady may be in relation to the actual video "Ordinary People", I find it not to be as funny anymore. Dont want to sound like the angry black man but with all the mess that is blasted in the media about us people of color i thought this was just a poor choice of a parady. Guess you just have to do what gets the attention and ratings...

this is the product of the
embarassing network BET....*shakes head*

okay maybe not, funny for a minute.

Front Page: Miri Ben-Ari

Miri Ben-Ari , the hip hop violinist is educating the public on the Jewish Holocaust, through a new campaign launched by her nonprofit organization Gedenk. Ari will officially kick off the effort this friday Friday [May 2nd].

IN SHORT: The Holocaust pertains to the genocide of approximately 6 million European Jews during World War II, at the hands of the Nazi regime in Germany led by Adolf Hitler.

Established in 2006, Gedenk is a humanitarian movement dedicated to teaching and raising youth awareness about the Jewish Holocaust as well as anti-Semitism, racism and its negative consequences on the world today.

"I founded Gedenk because I discovered there was an urgent need to expand youth education about the Holocaust," the Grammy winner said. "As a third generation to Holocaust survivors, I was appalled by studies showing that 50 percent of kids graduating high school in America don't know what the Holocaust is."

dont think this is the first
or the only act that Ari has lended herself

Okay,
here's yet another song that i know ill be bias on.
this is a new joint by Detroit native Teairra Mari, a former fav of mines.
this was my music boo/girlfriend for so long then she just fell off. Roc-A-Fella was my ish and she was the princess, she could do no wrong. So when i came across this track i was excited. Now i do like her, a lil disappointed that she let Rihanna come and take her shine, but i digress. Now im still in shock that i found this and im excited, but im going to challenge myself to listen to this same song about a day or so later and see if i actually still like it.

so that i dont have to wait that long.
click below and listen. let me know your thoughts on this

does the title predict its future?

eargasm: never love

This lady, Ms. Lady. 19 year old Ailani Yomeili[ EYE-LAH-KNEE YO-MAY-LEE ]
born and raised mostly in Brooklyn, NY. Both her and her partner creates her beats and produces her music. She's musically inclined even past her singing ability, she's a pianist and guitarist. && no the excitement for this 18 year old gem does NOT stop there, working along side producers such as Ryan Leslie, Scott Storch, Dem Jointz. && collaborations with new upcoming artist Krys Ivory, Jhene, Lil Fizz, Kanar

I was introduced to Ms. Yomeili about six or seven months ago, needless to say, i was all to impressed with her && her voice, in the age of technology, voice altering in studios && my pet peeve: lip syncing there is rarely a man woman or child who you can say can actually sing, (or in my old church lady voice) "sang". i heard her singing SWV's Weak and J.Holiday's Bed. && my new fav from here entitled Never Love her high voice is all to pleasing to my ears. hopefully to yours as well. An old school feel with a new school sound.

its something to listen to, and because of young joc's appearance on the track i can see it being played over and over and over...but im not a fan.

thank you Chuck Brown

go go music is a fav over here at the Professional Mannequin offices, especially by yours truly and the ravishing Madison. For those of you who dont know, gogo is a subgenre of funk that originated in the Washington, D.C., area during the mid- to late-1970s. Go-go's essential beat is characterized by a syncopated, dotted rhythm that consists of a series of quarter and eighth notes. Which is underscored most dramatically by the bass drum and snare drum, and the hi-hat && ornamented by the other percussion instruments, especially by the conga drums, timbale, and hand-held cowbells. [A swing rhythm is often implied].

A handful of bands contributed to the early evolution of the genre, but singer-guitarist Chuck Brown [the god father of go-go] is credited with having developed most of the hallmarks of the style. Gogo has changed and grown with the times, much like all forms of music. Some of the newer bands such as the COLDHEARTED BAND, and 3DB are my favs. GOGO has gone as mainstream as Toni Braxton, Amerie, and our fav big sister Beyonce'.

if you have not been exposed to gogo
PMqn is happy to assit in that area.
get into the playlist below.

Courtney && Beeph

Courtney and Beeph better known as Just.Live

a group i became hip to via myspace about a year ago.
Just.Live is a Minneapolis based group that have been creating music together since 2001. With an album entitled, Moxy and songs such as, Go Crazy, Whatever and So Ghetto. ALthough the music may put you in a hip hop state of mind, they do not consider themselves to be commonly categorized as Hip Hop or Pop artists. In fact Just.Live has given birth to their own genre and named it Hip Pop.

Just.Live describes their live performance as, “The freshest experience that musicians can produce. Like U2 meets Jay-Z featuring Avril Lavinge.” Inspired by life, shopping and the weirdness of relationships.

"Free from profanity and full of energy Moxy is a definite breath of fresh air"
